Sacramento, Sept. 9, 2009 The Sacramento Monarchs announced today the organization has signed guard Chelsea Newton to a rest-of-season contract; per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. In order to sign Newton, the Monarchs waived guard Lisa Willis, currently under her second seven-day contract, which was to expire this week on September 10.
Earlier this season, on August 7, the Monarchs waived Newton after she had surgery to remove loose cartilage pieces from her left knee which projected her to be sidelined 3-to-4 weeks. Previously during the 2009 season, Newton has played in 21 games with the Monarchs and is averaging 15.3 minutes, 3.0 points, 1.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.9 steals per game.
On Aug. 28, the Monarchs signed Willis to her first seven-day contact with the franchise, which ended on Sept. 3, 2009. During her first week stint, she made appearances in the game at Minnesota and at home versus Connecticut.
