Overseas Update #15
By Emily Diekelmann | March 16, 2010 Heading into the final few games of the regular season, Fenerbahce teammates Tammy Sutton-Brown and Ebony Hoffman continue their reign over the Turkish League with the 74-68 win over Kayseri. Sutton-Brown played well with 14 points and six rebounds. Hoffman did not play in the contest. Up next for Sutton-Brown and Hoffman is a match-up with fellow Fever teammate Briann January and Tarsus. January was in action for Tarsus against Kocaeli, March 13. Despite only playing 18 minutes, January netted six points and two steals in a lopsided 112-65 victory. Those steals helped move her into second place in the Turkish League in steals with an average of 2.9 per game, trailing Fever teammate Tamika Catchings. Galatasaray’s Catchings and Katie Douglas sit tight in the third place slot for the Turkish League at 14-4. Catchings had 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals in a win over Cankaya. Tamecka Dixon had eight points and four rebounds in a loss to Taranto (Italy). Dixon sits in a three-way tie for the Italian scoring title with 16.9 points per game. Dixon also is third in steals in the Italian League with 4.8 per game. In Russian League play, Jessica Moore had her fourth double-digit scoring performance with 14 points. Spartak St. Petersburg scored a season-high 103 points in a victory over Chevakata, 103-90. Christina Wirth continued to show her strength for Presov (Slovakia) with 16 points and three rebounds in a win over Kosice. So far this season, Wirth has scored in the double digits in 21 out of 22 contests. Rounding out Fever activity overseas, Shay Murphy had another outstanding performance for Mariana (Spain) with 24 points, six rebounds and four steals. Averaging 20.4 points per game, Murphy remains the top scorer in the Spanish League. She is also tied for first in steals with 2.7 per game.
Overseas Update #14 By Emily Diekelmann | March 12, 2010 Turkish League play featured Indiana teammates versus teammates as Tamika Catchings and Katie Douglas of Galatasaray squared off with Tammy Sutton-Brown and Ebony Hoffman of undefeated Fenerbahce. Scoring 15 points with six rebounds, Hoffman helped secure a 76-62 win for Fenerbahce as it continued its Turkish League dominance. Catchings had 13 points and four rebounds while Douglas added eight points in the loss. Catchings leads the Turkish League in steals with 3.2 per game. Elsewhere in Turkey, Briann January extended her streak of games with double-digit scoring with 12 points and three rebounds for Tarsus in a victory over Istanbul University. The win moved the team above .500 for the season with a 9-8 record. Playing their first game since Feb. 13, Jessica Moore and Spartak St. Petersburg (Russia) were in action against Dynamo. Netting eight points and seven rebounds, Moore helped Spartak move into a tie for fifth place in league play with the 76-68 win. Continuing her supremacy over Spanish League scorers, Shay Murphy scored 27 points with 11 rebounds in a win for Mariana. Not only is she the Spanish League’s leading scorer with 20.2 points per game, but she also sits in third place with an average of 2.6 steals a game. Landing her tenth straight double-digit scoring effort, Christina Wirth had 14 points and eight rebounds for Presov (Slovakia). Her offense was not enough as they fell at the hands of Ruzomberok, 74-69.
Overseas Update #13 By Emily Diekelmann | March 2, 2010 Checking in with the ladies overseas, Turkish leader Fenerbahce, with Tammy Sutton-Brown and Ebony Hoffman, faced a critical Euroleague series against Diana Taurasi and Spartak Moscow (Russia). Losing Game 1, 90-79, Tammy Sutton-Brown tried to lead a comeback in Game 2. She scored 16 points, but it wasn’t enough as Spartak eliminated Fenerbahce, 87-85. Hoffman did not play in the EuroLeague series. Turning right back to Turkish League play, Hoffman helped Fenerbahce past Kocaeli on Feb. 28, scoring six points with seven rebounds to keep her team unbeaten in the Turkish League. Elsewhere in Turkey, Tamika Catchings had 14 points and four rebounds in Galatasaray’s 85-61 win over Besiktas. Katie Douglas added nine points and three rebounds. Briann January helped Tarsus to a 27-point victory by scoring 13 points in limited minutes. A big game in this week’s Turkish schedule pits Galatasaray against front-running Fenerbahce. On the floor will be four Fever teammates with the Catchings/Douglas duo battling Hoffman and Sutton-Brown. Scoring 10 points in a win over Livorno (Italy), Tamecka Dixon still enjoys her perch at the top of the scoring race averaging 17.5 points per game. Christina Wirth had a hand in assisting her team, Presov (Slovakia) to back-to-back victories last week. First, she netted 21 points with eight rebounds against Poprad, Feb 25. Three days later, she had 24 points and eight rebounds in a 74-72 win over Kosice. Shay Murphy helped increase her lead other Spanish League scoring leaders with a season-high 35 points. She also added eight rebounds, helping Mariana to an 80-76 victory.
Overseas Update #12 By Emily Diekelmann | February 23, 2010 Overseas play is pushing right along as teams continue battling each other inside and out of their respective leagues. Trying to keep their perfect Turkish League season intact, Fenerbahce met Istanbul University. Ebony Hoffman registered her third double-digit scoring game with 16 points and five rebounds in a 78-67 victory. Katie Douglas and Tamika Catchings were in action for Galatasaray (Turkey) against Kocaeli. Winning the game easily, 93-50, Douglas had seven points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes. Catchings added five points during only 12 minutes on the court. Rounding out play in Turkey, Briann January scored in the double digits for her fifth straight game with 10 points and going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Despite her efforts, Tarsus still fell to Mersin, 67-62. Christina Wirth continued her success with Presov (Slovakia), scoring 11 points with seven rebounds in a rout of Nitra, 91-46. Over the past seven games, Wirth has averaged 16.7 points per game with a season high of 30 on Jan. 17. As Tamecka Dixon finishes her pro career in Italy, she is maintained her scoring prowess last week by netting 15 points with six rebounds in a loss to Vomero, 70-68. Sitting tight in second place on the top scorer list for the Spanish League, Shay Murphy helped her average by scoring 21 points and adding four rebounds in a defeat to Real C. Vigo, 84-70.
Overseas Update #11 By Emily Diekelmann | February 16, 2010 Checking in with the ladies overseas, Turkish League play resumed after a week off for EuroLeague competition. Ebony Hoffman and Tammy Sutton-Brown led Fenerbahce to an 85-70 win over Ceyhan Bld. Hoffman had 13 points with six rebounds while Sutton-Brown added 11 points in the victory. The win keeps Fenerbahce perfect (13-0) in Turkish league contests. Elsewhere in Turkey, Tamika Catchings and Katie Douglas were in action for Galatasaray. Facing Samsun Feb. 13, Douglas had her second-highest scoring game this season with 23 points. Catchings put up nine points and seven rebounds in a lopsided win, 87-57. Briann January played well for Tarsus (Turkey) against Cankaya, netting 16 points with seven assists. The win helped Tarsus move back to .500 at 7-7 for the season. In Russia, Jessica Moore had a season-high 15 points and 10 rebounds to help Spartak St. Petersburg to a 68-62 win over Spartak Moscow. Still sitting atop the Italian League scoring list, Tamecka Dixon (18.3 points per game) also leads the league with an average of 5.2 steals per game. Despite Dixon's 15 points and nine rebounds, GMA Napoli fell to San Giovanni, 63-57. Turning to the Spanish League, Shay Murphy went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line and scored 30 points for Mariana (Spain) in a win over Rivas Ecopolis. In Slovakia, Christina Wirth and Presov overcame league foe Ružomberok, 76-69. Wirth had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Overseas Update #10 By Emily Diekelmann | February 9, 2010 Recapping last week's events overseas, EuroLeague teams took part in what is the equivalent of the "Sweet Sixteen" of the annual EuroLeague playoffs, with eight best-of-three series pitting Europe's top 16 teams. Fever stars Katie Douglas and Ebony Hoffman did not play in their respective series due to EuroLeague rules prohibiting more than two American players on each team. Tamika Catchings was in EuroLeague play with Galatasaray (Turkey), sharing the spotlight with fellow WNBA star Sophia Young, and facing WNBA stars Candace Parker and Cappie Pondexter while leading defending EuroLeague runner-up UMMC Ekaterinburg (Russia). Catchings scored seven points with three assists in a Game 1 loss, 79-55. In Game 2, Galatasaray trailed just 50-49 with three minutes to play, but a late surge by the Russians propelled UMMC Ekaterinburg to a 61-50 win, despite 15 points from Catchings. Galatasaray was eliminated from EuroLeague competition. Tammy Sutton-Brown and Fenerbahce (Turkey) were also active in EuroLeague playoffs, taking on Taranto (Italy) in a three-game series. Sutton-Brown netted 16 points with six rebounds in an 89-83 Game 1 victory. In Game 2, Fenerbahce was victorious once again, beating Taranto 60-55. Sutton-Brown added six points and five rebounds to the win as Fenerbahce advanced to the round of eight. Elsewhere in Europe, while playing for Spartak St. Petersburg (Russia), Jessica Moore scored nine points in a loss to Nadezhda (Russia). In just her fourth game since going to Russia, Moore is averaging nine points and four rebounds a game. Spartak St. Petersburg does not compete in EuroLeague or EuroCup. With her team in second place and while averaging 21.6 points per game in the Slovakian League, Christina Wirth racked up 19 points and nine rebounds in a victory over BSS Kosice (Slovakia).
Overseas Update #9 By Emily Diekelmann | Feb. 2, 2010 Updating action overseas, Tamika Catchings played her first game with new team Galatasaray (Turkey) alongside fellow Fever teammate Katie Douglas. Together, the two combined for 24 points in a 67-59 victory over Botas (Turkey). Also of note in that game was former Rutgers guard Epiphanny Prince, whose name may be seen by WNBA fans in April. The WNBA draft prospect left Rutgers after her junior year to play in Europe and will be eligible for this year's draft. Since the WNBA was established in 1997, she is the first such player to leave a U.S. college with remaining eligibility. Prince performed well for Botas with nine points and six rebounds in the loss against Galatasaray. Prince currently ranks third in the Turkish League in scoring, averaging 18.6 points a game. Making her debut with Fenerbache (Turkey), Ebony Hoffman put up 20 points and four rebounds in a 93-76 victory over Cankaya. Tammy Sutton-Brown added four points to the victory, keeping Fenerbache at a perfect 12-0 in Turkish League play. Continuing her reign as the Italian League scoring leader, Tamecka Dixon netted 24 points with seven steals for Napoli (Italy) in an 85-71 loss at the hands of Faenza. Shay Murphy scored 26 with 10 rebounds for Mariana (Spain) in a 73-70 defeat by Estudiantes (Spain). She has scored at least 20 points in eight of her team's 16 games. Christina Wirth registered 13 points in a 61-59 loss to Poprad, Jan. 31, as her team fell into a third place tie in the Slovakian League. Wirth is currently second in the league in scoring with 21.6 points per game.
Overseas Update #8 By Emily Diekelmann | Jan. 28, 2010 In recent overseas activity, the Turkish League has added more Fever players to its rosters. Tamika Catchings has joined Katie Douglas on Galatasaray and Ebony Hoffman will play alongside Tammy Sutton-Brown on Fenerbahce, which currently sits atop the Turkish standings with a perfect 11-0 record. Douglas continues to play well, scoring 19 in a 70-50 victory over Ceyhan, Jan. 16. She is currently ranked sixth in scoring for the Turkish League with 16.4 points per game. Sutton-Brown participated in her fourth straight Turkish League All-Star Game, where her team, the Import Stars, beat the Turkish Stars, 108-78. Sutton-Brown finished the game with nine points and two rebounds. Tamecka Dixon (Napoli, Italy) scored 24 points and had five assists in a loss at Faenza. Dixon maintains her status as the top scorer in the Italian League, averaging 19.5 points per contest. Shay Murphy added 13 points to bring Mariana (Spain) back to .500 at 8-8 with a win over Hondarribia-Irun, Jan 23. Christina Wirth provided a big boost for Presov (Slovakia), scoring a season-high 30 points in a 114-61 rout of Roznava, Jan. 17. Overseas Update #7 by Justin Whitaker | Dec. 16, 2009 In the latest Indiana Fever overseas player update, Katie Douglas' Galatasaray (Turkey) clinched a spot in the preliminary round of the Euroleague playoffs and Shay Murphy continues to play well for Mariana (Spain). Douglas scored 17 points in a 71-55 victory over TTT Riga to clinch the playoff spot. Galatasaray is now 6-2 in Turkish League action and 4-3 in Euroleague. On Dec. 12, Murphy led her team to a 79-74 victory against EBE Ibiza-PDV. She had 19 points and 14 rebounds in the game. Mariana is seventh in the Spanish league at 5-6, with Murphy third in the league in scoring 18.4 points per game. Fenerbahce (Turkey) continued its hot streak with an 86-70 win against Frisco Sika. Tammy Sutton-Brown had 10 points and five rebounds in the victory. Fenerbahce is 5-2 in Euroleague and 8-0 in Turkish League play. Tamecka Dixon scored 19 points and had seven rebounds in a 71-58 loss against Priolo (Italy). Dixon continues to lead the Italian League in scoring, averaging 22.5 points per game.
Overseas Update #6 Tammy Sutton-Brown and Fenerbahce (Turkey), continued their hot streak this week with two victories. In the first game on Dec. 3, Sutton-Brown scored 16 points and added five rebounds in a 69-63 victory over Euroleague opponent Lotos Gdynia. On Dec. 6, she scored five points in an 88-75 victory over TED Kaysen pushing Fenerbahce to 7-0 in the Turkish League. Fenerbahce is 4-2 in Euroleague action. Katie Douglas scored a season-high 25 points in an 82-71 victory over Cankaya. Galasataray is now 5-2 in the Turkish League and 3-3 in Euroleague. Shay Murphy led Mariana in scoring with 21 points in an 82-78 loss against Olesa. She has scored in double-figures in eight of nine games for Mariana. They are 4-6 on the season. Tamecka Dixon did not play in GMA Napoli's Dec. 6 game, but she still leads the Italian League in scoring averaging 23 points per game. Dixon's team is 2-7 this season.
KT vs. TSB This week, Indiana Fever teammates Katie Douglas and Tammy Sutton-Brown met head-to-head in Turkish League action. Douglas' Galasataray team lost to Sutton-Brown's Fenerbahce squad 84-77. Douglas had the better individual game statistically, leading her team in scoring with 18 points, six assists and five rebounds. Sutton-Brown had six points and seven rebounds in 22 minutes. Fenerbahce is now 6-0 in Turkish League and 10-2 overall. Galasataray dropped to 4-2 in the Turkish League and is 7-5 overall. The Turkish League is shaping up as one of Europe's strongest this winter. Sutton-Brown's Fenerbahce teammates include fellow WNBA players Penny Taylor and Nicole Powell. Douglas is joined by a pair of two WNBA players in Jia Perkins and Sophia Young. The Turkish League also boasts a very interesting rookie in former Rutgers star Epiphanny Prince, who left the American college after her junior year to enter pro basketball. Playing for Botaº Spor in Adana, Turkey, she will be eligible for the WNBA Draft next April. Fenerbahce and Galasataray will meet again on March 6.
Katie Douglas with 18 points Katie Douglas is most recent Indiana Fever player to begin playing overseas. She made her debut on Nov. 22, for Galatasaray of Istanbul, Turkey. She joined two fellow WNBA players on the roster in the Chicago Sky's Jia Perkins and the San Antonio Silver Stars' Sophia Young. Galatasaray beat its Turkish League opponent, Besiktas, 79-68. Douglas had 18 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Her team is 4-1 in Turkish League play and 3-2 against Euroleague opponents. Also playing in Istanbul is Fever center Tammy Sutton-Brown. Sutton-Brown's team, Fenerbahce is 5-0 in the Turkish League and is 3-2 in Euroleague. She is averaging 10.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per Turkish League game; and 6.2 points and 3.0 rebounds in Euroleague games. In Spain, Shay Murphy has continued her strong play, scoring in double figures in seven of her eight games played. She is averaging 18 points, 7 rebounds and 2.4 steals. Her team, Mariana is 4-5. Tamecka Dixon has also continued to play well in Italy as she leads the Italian League in scoring with 23 points per game. Her team is 2-6 and its most recent loss came at the hands of undefeated Taranto, 65-62. Dixon had 19 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals in that game.
Fever players are continuing to play well Indiana Fever players are continuing to play well all across Europe and the world. On Nov. 14, Shay Murphy had 24 points on 7-for-14 shooting in an 84-70 loss against Real C. Vigo. Her team is 2-5 in Spanish League play and she leads her team in scoring with 19.8 points per game. Murphy recently took time out of her busy schedule in Spain to answer 10 Questions here at FeverBasketball.com. Christina Wirth played in two games last week in Slovakia, with Presov splitting the games. On Nov. 11, against Poprad, she led her team to an 84-68 victory with 27 points including 5-for-8 from beyond the arc. Against Nitra on Nov. 15, Wirth had 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 66-54 loss. Wirth is averaging 21.7 ppg and shooting 94 percent from the free-throw line. Her team is 8-4 on the season and 4-2 since Wirth joined the team. Tamecka Dixon averages 26.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and five steals per game. Her team is 1-4 this season. Tammy Sutton-Brown did not play in the 84-64 victory against Istanbul University. Her team is 1-2 in EuroLeague and 4-0 in Turkish League games. Katie Douglas should begin playing in Turkey soon for Galatasaray. Her team is 3-0 in EuroLeague and 3-1 in the Turkish League. Douglas' Galatasaray will play Sutton-Brown's Fenerbahce on Nov. 28 in a matchup between Turkish League powerhouses.
Fever players slowly returning to action overseas Three Indiana Fever players in the beginning portion of their overseas schedules were joined this week by another. Tammy Sutton-Brown made her overseas debut last week in Turkey for three-time defending Turkish champion Fenerbahce. On Nov. 8, Sutton-Brown recorded 11 points and five rebounds in an 82-73 victory over Ceyhan Bid. Fenerbahce is now 3-0 in Turkish League play and 4-1 overall. Sutton-Brown is beginning her fourth straight season with the Istanbul-based team. In Italy, Tamecka Dixon has kept up her strong play with a great game on Nov. 7 against Bracco Geas. G.M.A. Napoli won 77-68, on the back of Dixon's 22 points, nine rebounds and six steals. In four games, Dixon is averaging 26.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, five steals and 2.8 assists. She is also shooting 50 percent from the field. In France, Shay Murphy leads her team, Soller Joventut Mariana, with 19 points per game and is second on the team in rebounds with 7.6 per game. In Slovakia, Christina Wirth's team, Presov, is third in the league and 8-3 overall. Presov is 4-1 since Wirth joined the team. She is averaging 21.4 points per game, including a 27-point effort against Poprad in an 84-68 victory.
Fever players already in action overseas The overseas women's basketball leagues have officially started and Indiana Fever players are just beginning to play.Currently, Indiana has seven players overseas: Jessica Davenport (China), Tamecka Dixon (Italy, G.M.A. Napoli), Katie Douglas (Turkey, Galatasaray), Jessica Moore (Russia, Spartak), Shay Murphy (Spain, Soller Joventud Mariana), Tammy Sutton-Brown (Turkey, Fenerbahce) and Christina Wirth (Slovakia, Presov). Tully Bevilaqua will remain in Indianapolis through this winter basketball season. Tamika Catchings and Ebony Hoffman both will venture overseas in January. Speaking of January, Briann is resting after her senior year of college and first pro season which ran consecutive over the past 12 months. She is slated to play overseas some time in December. Not all players have actually started playing games with their new teams, but Fever reserves Murphy and Dixon have started off hot in their respective leagues. In four games in Spain, Murphy is averaging 23 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.8 steals. She is also shooting 52.5 percent from the field. Her best game came against Estudiantes in a 74-69 victory on Oct. 25 when she had 21 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. In three games in Italy, Dixon is averaging 28.3 points, six rebounds and 4.7 steals. Her best game was on Oct. 18 when she scored 33 points and had seven steals in an 82-72 loss against Comense.
